About

I grew up in Kiel, the capital of Schleswig-Holstein. You can check what is going on in Kiel on this page. Schleswig-Holstein is the northernmost state of Germany lying between the Baltic and the North Sea. I went to school and university in Kiel. I finished school in 1986 and started at university a year later after my national service. At university I studied Physics. In October 1993 I graduated as Diplom-Physiker in Theoretical Physics. I studied at the Institute for Theoretical Physics and my supervisor was Prof. F. Wagner.

In April 1993 I went to Durham for a PhD. I’d been here before to do an MSc. My supervisor was Ed Corrigan. My research was in affine Toda field theory. Together with Alexander Iskandar and William McGhee I published a paper on breathers. Together with Darren Wilkinson I started the webserver of the Maths department in Durham, at a time when “making a list of all webservers” still seemed to be a sensible idea. Later on I maintained the informal web pages for the Maths department and those of the official pages of the CPT pages. I finished my PhD in May 1996.

From August 1996 to June 2000 I worked for Metron Technology Ltd. in Taunton as a software engineer. Metron Technology specialises in performance and capacity planning of computer systems. My main interest was the performance of databases. Also, I was one of the network administrators looking after the internal network. I have given a talk at UKCMG 99 in York and a talk and poster at UKPEW 99 in Bristol.

From July 2000 to the very end of 2012 I worked at the Department of Computing at Imperial College as a Research Associate for Peter Harrison and Tony Field on the QUAINT project. After that I worked on various other projects in AESOP group.

From January 2013 to August 2013 I worked for Passivsystems Ltd. in Newbury. After a short contract working for Simulamen I have been working for Exony Ltd. (bought by eGain) from December 2013 to April 2015. After a short spell of a few months in Kiel I am now back in the UK working for Yell.

In the Web 2.0 you find me on Twitter, Flickr, Facebook, LinkedIn, Mastodon and Stayfriends. I have also been increasing the size of the www with my contributions to Ashok‘s now sadly defunct gallery, most of the pictures are now slowly appearing on Google Photos.
